The Problem

Tracking expenses can be challenging and intimidating, as it can be time-consuming, tedious, or overwhelming, leading to low motivation and ultimately giving up on it.

Project Goals

Research

We want to know what motivates and deters users from tracking their expenses so that we can find ways to motivate users and help them gain more confidence in managing their finances.

Competitive Analysis

User Interview

I recruited 5 participants for user interviews in order to gain insights into their pain points and overall experience regarding tracking expenses.

100% are aware that tracking expenses will allow them to make smarter choices for future spending.

80% expressed that they are unable to track expenses consistently.

80% expressed concern about feeling overwhelmed by the tracking process.

100% agreed that tracking expenses is a habit that takes time to build up but find it hard to stay consistent.

User Persona

Kaitlyn is a digital nomad working and traveling around the world. She tried tracking her expenses to manage her money better while traveling but was unable to keep up with the tedious process.

Goals

  • Simple and easy way to track expenses

  • Track both credit cards and cash payments

  • Understanding her spending habits

Frustrations

  • Inconsistency in tracking

  • Unable to keep track of her receipts

  • Highly anxious because is more work and stressful


Lucas is a new graduate and recently started his new job as a financial analyst. He thinks tracking expenses is a good habit to start developing when he is young but does not feel motivated enough to do so.

Goals

  • Start building the habit of tracking expenses

  • Find ways to categorize his expenses

Frustrations

  • Not knowing where and how to start

  • Busy between work and social life

  • Do not have major financial goals

User & Task Flows

Design System

I designed the icons, credit cards, and badges for this project. The website's primary color is purple due to its association with traits such as security, trust, and reliability. I also used simple icons drawn with lines to create a neat and minimal look.

Results

  • 5/5 participants completed all six tasks successfully

  • 5/5 participants completed all task flow within 30 seconds.

  • 4/5 struggled to find the add button

  • 5/5 participants found the website intuitive and tasks were seamless.

Gaining Invaluable Insights through Real-Life Research: The process of conducting real-life research was challenging but it was invaluable as it provided eye-opening insights that allowed me to develop a more comprehensive and refined product that really caters to users’ needs.
